Sermon Series - Romans
Sermon Preacher & Text: Luke Dufek, Romans 9:30-10:4
TITLE: Zeal for God is Not Enough
SUMMARY: It was the Lord Jesus’ zeal for God that led him to drive out from the temple those who had made his Father’s house a house of trade. Later, in Romans chapter twelve, Paul exhorts Christians who lead to do so "with zeal” and instructs all Christians to “not be slothful in zeal”. Clearly, zeal for God can be good, even necessary. However, in this passage, Paul tells us that zeal is not enough because zeal for God cannot make one righteous before God; only faith in Christ can do that.

Themes: God’s Law
Pastor: Psalm 19 says:
          “The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul;
the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;
            the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;
the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.”

Confession of Sin
Church: Almighty and most merciful Father, despite the warnings of your law and the promises of reward for those who keep the law, we have sinned. We are thankful that your mercy is higher than the heavens, wider than our wanderings, deeper than all our sin. Forgive our careless attitudes toward your purposes, our refusal to love others rightly as you have commanded, our envy of those who have more than we have, our obsession with creating a life of constant pleasure, our indifference to the treasures of heaven, our neglect of your wise and perfect law. Help us to desire what is good, love what you love, and do what you command in the law.

“Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me!” (Psalm 19:12).

Assurance of Pardon
Pastor: Church, God’s law with all its blessings warns us of the dangers of sin and shows us how we all fall short and are dead in our sins. But remember, Christ has fulfilled the law for us and is our peace. Christ has reconciled us to God by atoning for our sins and has killed the hostility that God had against us, nailing it to the cross. Now, because of Christ, we find comfort in the blessings of the law, turn from our sins, and rest in the finished work of King Jesus. (Paraphrased from Ephesians 2:14–16)
All: “Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:13-14)
