SERMON DETAILS
Sermon Series -Romans
Sermon Preacher & Text: Luke Dufek, Romans 9:14-18
TITLE: The Sovereign Mercy of God
SUMMARY: Is there injustice on God’s part? With these verses, the Apostle Paul provides the answer to this question that many will ask in response to the doctrine of election. His answer is a resounding no, absolutely not! God is not guilty of injustice. To explain why this is, Paul directs us to the truth of God's sovereign mercy. While the reality that God is free to have mercy on whomever God chooses may lead to more questions, it should also lead all who have experienced God’s mercy to rejoice and give thanks to the God of mercy.

Confession of Sin
Church: Almighty Father, your love is steadfast, your mercy is abundant, and your grace abounds. Please forgive us for not loving you and others rightly. Please forgive us for disobeying your word, for breaking your law, for going our own way.
We confess that at times we are obsessed with worldly things that won’t last. We confess that when things don’t go our way we often grumble and complain. We confess that we have sinned in our thoughts, with our words, and by our actions.
We plead for forgiveness on the merits of Jesus Christ alone. Accept his worthiness for our unworthiness, his sinlessness for our sinfulness, his obedience for our disobedience, his death for our life.

Assurance of Pardon
Pastor: In Jesus Christ, we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of God’s grace. Church, for our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Brothers and sisters, God’s love is steadfast, his mercy is abundant, and his grace abounds! May all who confess their sins and trust in Jesus Christ alone be assured today that their sins are forgiven.
(adapted from Ephesians 1:7, 2 Corinthians 5:21)
All: Though our sins are many, God’s mercy is more. We praise you LORD!

NEW CITY CATECHISM:
Q 11: What does God require in the sixth, seventh, and eighth commandments?
A 11: Sixth, that we do not hurt, or hate, or be hostile to our neighbor, but be patient and peaceful, pursuing even our enemies with love. Seventh, that we abstain from sexual immorality and live purely and faithfully, whether in marriage or in single life, avoiding all impure actions, looks, words, thoughts, or desires, and whatever might lead to them. Eighth, that we do not take without permission that which belongs to someone else, nor withhold any good from someone we might benefit.
