READ, SING & PRAY
As believers, we are all called to worship our God daily. And we are also given the wonderful and joyous task of worshipping Him daily in our homes and with our families. This is known as family worship. Its practice is evident throughout the Bible and family worship can be seen as far back as Genesis when the Lord says of Abraham in Genesis 18:19 “For I have chosen him, that he command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD...”
Perhaps the best-known text in the Bible commanding families to teach their children is found in the words of Moses in Deuteronomy 6:7, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”
There are many places in scripture that highlight both the importance and the command to teach the things of the Lord to our families. But the truth is, many of us already know we are called to worship God with our families. And oftentimes, we think this is a very difficult task to accomplish. We tend to think we need to be extremely clever and creative, taking hours to come up with a devotional curriculum. We can likely overcomplicate what God has called us to do.
The good news is, God has already given us what we need to accomplish this. Like the early church, all we need is the Word of God, our voices, and the amazing privilege which has been given to us to commune with our Father in prayer. These three elements comprise family worship – “Read, Pray, and Sing.” Daily, we read the Bible with our family, we sing songs together to God, and we pray and thank our Lord for his goodness and mercy! It’s that simple!
