The 5th Commandment | Honor, Respect, & Authority

Jun 24, 2026    John Pfannerstill, Drew Hacker, Derek Best

Why does it seem that our nation is under judgment, and why does it no longer “go well in the land” as God promises to those who walk in His ways? What is happening in the United States that makes us feel the weight of sin, confusion, and unraveling authority structures?

“Honor thy father and thy mother” is a phrase that lives rent‑free in many of our minds, surfacing whenever we think about family or instruct our children. But what makes this commandment unique, and why is it placed where it is in the Ten Commandments? Did it expire with the old covenant, or does it still shape Christian families today? And do its implications reach beyond the nuclear family into the fabric of society itself?

Join Pastors Pfannerstill, Hacker, and Best as they explore the Fifth Commandment and its far‑reaching significance on this episode of TreasureCast. After you watch or listen, we’d love to hear your thoughts. Email us at treasurecast@woodridge.cc with questions, feedback, or suggestions for future episodes.

Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. (ESV). Ephesians 6:1–3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” (ESV). Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. (ESV).

General Meaning - To honor someone is to regard them with high respect and esteem, recognizing their worth, achievements, or moral integrity. This can include verbal praise, public acknowledgment, or gestures that demonstrate appreciation and admiration for the person’s contributions or character (Merriam-Webster).

Religious Perspective - In religious contexts, such as in the Bible, to honor someone means to value them

highly and show esteem, particularly toward parents, elders, or those in

authority. This can involve obedience, respect, and acknowledgment of their

role or position, reflecting both moral and spiritual principles

(GotQuestions.org).
